Most levels of accommodations are available in Haiti, from super-basic guesthouses to top-end hotels and beach resorts. Budget accommodation is extremely limited though, due to a huge population of NGO workers with expense accounts throughout the country. Port-au-Prince has a number of small private guesthouses that cater primarily to visiting church groups, volunteers and aid workers.
They offer a homey alternative to hotels, with a modest price tag attached. Bathroom facilities are invariably shared. These places often have a strong Christian ethic attached, and may operate night curfews.
At the budget end, hotels can be dreary. We recommend bringing a flashlight, although power cuts are less frequent as the country recovers from earthquakes and hurricanes. Most hotels of all ranges have attached restaurants or bars, and wi-fi access is now standard in most higher-end properties.
Mosquito nets are rare. Prices are all-inclusive, usually with a couple of bars and restaurants to choose from, along with water sports and other activities.
