Read the rules before submitting. I'm looking to assemble a FDL to escort a friend who'll start playing soon. I've never done much PvP, so I've had a bit of a hard time deciding on a build. This is what I have so far, any thoughts? Version 3 - Managed to fit a single E shield booster.
Flak cannons have limited ammo that requires a pretty frequent reload, and also have almost no range, unless you are basically touching the enemy ship you aren't going to get the full damage and its just more efficient to use something else that is more accurate and has a better ammo capacity. Torpedos also limit ammo a bunch and counter measures and point defense turrets can render the limited ammo useless.
Are you referring to the Fragment Cannon? If so I've never run one myself, but from seeing them used by NPCs their range is far too low to be of use.
Torpedoes have better range, but their travel time is far to slow vs a target that knows that to run in a straight line. Mine layers Not enough ammo, and if -I'm- being chased I've already screwed up beyond belief. I haven't tried a loadout exactly like that, but I have tried 3 beams 2 turrets, 1 fixed and 1 railgun - and overheating ship not guns was a MAJOR issue. With that in mind, I'd suggest trying something like this with 3 heatsinks on your spare slots.
Also a shield booster which you'll have to manually switch off to use your cell bank fiddly, but then you get the best of both worlds.
